Sunset Speedway, Saturday August 27, 2011

After the previous week being rained out both Saturday and Sunday. Tom and the crew were pretty anxious to get back to racing. The skies were clear and looking good for some racing.

In the first heat Tom started 2nd. With the 11 of Morrow on pole. Tom would finish 2nd. The crew had gone to work, making changes for the next heat. The second heat had Tom starting 6th and was able to work his way up to a forth place finish.

In the feature Tom started ninth. Once Tom was able to clear traffic, he would make his way to second behind the 11 of Morrow. It was pretty evident that Tom was loose coming of the turns and not be able to keep his foot on the gas. He would race Morrow for the position, side by side, but wasn't able to clear him enough to get full use of the track. and once again Tom was able to get a second place finish to Morrow.

It would turn out to be a great points night, as between 1st and 4th there is only 9 points total separating the top four cars.

Once again special thanks go out to everyone involved. Please keep in mind that this weekend is a double header. Racing Saturday and Sunday. Also this Saturday will be the Ontario South Simcoe Special Olympics on hand. Sunday is the third installment of the McColl Racing Limited Late Model 75 Lap Invitational. Hope to see everyone there. Have a great week.

Sunset Speedway, Saturday August 13, 2011

With the forcast showing rain for the evening. It would prove to be a good night with most of the racing being completed before the rains came. Tom and the crew knew that they had their work cut out for them on this night.

With a forth place finish in the first heat and a third place finish in the second heat. The crew had to make adjustments to get the maximum out the car.

In the feature, Tom would start 10th. With racing being so tight and no one giving an inch, Tom would work his way up to second with the 17 of Cornelius right on his bumper, trying to make a move to overtake Tom. In the final lap, Cornelius would get into Tom, Tom was able to keep the car from going around, the 17 was not so lucky, sending himself around. The feature would end under caution with Tom coming home second to the 11 of Morrow.

It was a good finish on the night, Tom and the crew were pleased with the finish, but still looking for a win. Special thanks to McColl Racing and Pro Floors of Barrie, as well as the entire crew for their help every week.

Kawartha Speeday 100 Lap Invitational,Friday August 12, 2011

Tom decided to venture out to Kawartha for the 100 lap late model race. Having not been there in quite awhile and a different car. He really wanted to see what the night would bring.

It would prove to be a very tough field of cars. In the heat Tom was able to maintain a forth place finish and make the line up for the semi.

With going into the semi in the final position, it would give him time and room to see where adjustments needed to be made.

Tom started the feature in ninth. He made his way to the pits at around lap 70. He had serious handling problems with the rear end feeling like it was floating around and to the crews amazement, it was doing exactly that as the j bar had broke loose. With not enough time to fix it, Tom would drive the last 30 laps with a ill handling car. With all of that he was able to bring home a tenth place finish, with all things considered that would be a great finish.

Thanks to the entire crew for their help on the night.

Sunset Speedway,Saturday August 6, 2011

This past Saturday night was the second of three Fan Appreciation nights hosted by Sunset Speedway this year. It was a warm dry night considering the weather forcasters had claimed a different story all day. It was nice to see everyone come out on the track and take part in the excitement. It certainly makes all drivers appreciate why they race for the fans every week.

After a busy week out at McColls with the car, the crew were happy with the way the car was working when Tom took to the racetrack.

Tom would end up finishing 2nd in his first heat and 4th in the second heat.

The feature had Tom starting 10th. Tom finished 5th on the night.

Sunset Speedway, Saturday July 30th and Sunday July 31, 2011

Well it has been a very interesting couple of weeks to say the least. Plenty of highs and lows. Starting with July 30th.

The real life Cinderella story would continue, even as the field slowed for the lap 18 caution that changed the face of the race - and perhaps the 2011 points championship. While battling for the 9th position, point leader Dwayne Baker (No. 48 Zancor Custom Homes/Clearview Heating Chevrolet) and defending champion Tom Walters (No. 47 McColl Racing Enterprises/Pro Floor Sanding & Refinishing Chevrolet) made contact exiting turn-4. The result would see Baker careening down the front straightaway backwards, before making contact with the inside retaining wall, virtually destroying the entire rear-end of his car. After a few tense moments, Baker fired up his wounded ride and limped towards Walters', who had parked his undamaged car on the front straightaway with the rest of the field. Then, without notice, Baker gunned his motor, slamming into the front-end of Walters' stationary ride.

Tom would suffer a second DNF this season. With the second McColl race happening on the Sunday July 30th, Tom and the crew would not make a decision on repairing the car till Sunday morning. Once the damage was assessed, everyone decided to pull together and repair the car.

After a busy day of rebuilding the nose of his #47 as the result of an altercation the night prior, Stompin' Tom Walters marched through the Late Model field and took the lead on lap 51 of the 75 lap affair. He would lead the final 24 laps on route to the win over Sean Cronan, Tony Tiemersma, Chris Morrow and Al Inglis. It was certainly a nice finish to the weekend.

Many thanks go out to everyone on the crew, without their hard work and dedication, none of this would be possible. Thanks to Pro Floors Barrie and McColl Racing Enterprises.

Sunset Speedway, Saturday July 23rd, 2011

Saturday saw another night of great racing. The late models would take to the track first for their qualifying heats. The crew had been busy all week working on the 47. With it being early in the evening, the track was still quite slick and hot, which made for different adjustments to the car.

In the first heat, Tom would start sixth. Within a couple laps of the start, Tom would bounce off the wall extremely hard and from that point it was evident that the crew would have to get to work to get the car in better shape for the second heat. Tom would finish sixth.

In the second heat Tom would start third. It would seem that Tom still had issues with the handling, but managed to finish 3rd.

After the heats, there wasn't much time but the crew all got together and tried to correct some of the issues. They worked right up until the call for late models to the back shoot. At that point the crew hoped that they had enough to help the ill handling car. Tom would start 11th in the feature. There would also be a radio problem in the feature, from the stands it had looked as though the car was handling a little better, but unable to communicate with Tom. The crew would only be able to tell him what they were seeing. Early in the feature there would be a caution. Tom had hit the back straight away wall again as he was getting by the 29 of Grosman. Tom worked his way up to 2nd behind the 11 of Morrow, but with the state of car being extremely loose, Tom knew he could not get by and would settle for finishing 2nd on the night.

All in all considered all the problems that Tom and crew were dealing with. Tom was happy with the outcome.

Please remember that Saturday night is a regular night of racing and that we will also be racing on Sunday as well for the second installment of the McColl Racing Enterprises 75 lap Invitational. Hope to see everyone there. Have a great week and stay cool.

Sunset Speedway, Open Late Model Race, Sunday July 9, 2011

Well after having the setback on Saturday, it was time to put that behind us and get ready for whole new day hopefully with a better outcome. Tom and the crew were at track as soon as the gates opened on Sunday to make some repairs from the previous night and try to sort out what had happened Saturday night with the distributor. Tom had another distributor on hand. The crew worked away making all the necessary changes, by the time first practice was set to go out on the track, the team was ready.

In the first heat Tom would start on the front row outside the 82 of Shaw. No stranger to Tom going back to days of the Alstar Series. On the start Shaw got out early and Tom would tuck behind where he would finish a very respectible 2nd.

In the second heat, this saw Tom starting 6th, and worked his way up to 4th. It seemed that the bugs plaguing the team the night before were gone and the car looked very good and very competitive to keep with everyone on the track.

For the feature Tom was set to start 6th overall. In on track introductions the 36 of Elliott would roll 2 dice and he rolled a seven, in turn this put Tom outside poll along side 55 of Rankin. At the drop of the green Tom took of and quickly got out front of the field. The 82 of Shaw would make his way to front quite quickly and was looking inside of Tom to get the lead. Shaw would get the lead but was unable to get to far ahead of Tom. In the same style half way through the feature, Tom would find his way around Shaw and was able to hold Shaw off for the rest of the feature.

I believe that both Tom and the crew breathed a sigh of relief, to come from such a horrible night before to win a prestigious race like this with so many tough competitors on hand.

Congratulations to Tom, Dan Robb, Jeff Thomas, Paul Clinton, Travis Wilkes, Herb Walters Mike Rusher on a job well done by everyone.

Special thanks to McColl Racing Enterprises for an outstanding piece to work with every week and special thanks to Mike from Pro Floors for the amazing support every week.

Sunset Speedway, Saturday July 9, 2011

Well it was fan appreciation night on Saturday as if had been held over from 2 weeks ago because of the rainout. It was great to see everyone come out and enjoy the festivities.

Tom's night really got started like no other. The first heat had him starting on the pole but he eventually would not finish. The 84 of Cronan had decided to pay Tom back for an incident in a previous race. When Tom finally came to rest in turn 4, the car would not fire and he would not finish his heat. Once into the pits, the crew quickly determined that the distributor was culprit, that would not get him fired up. They quickly went to work to remedy the situtation before the start of the next heat.

In the second heat Tom started dead last and everyone had their fingers crossed that the gremlins would stay away and so they did. Tom won the second heat, but once the photos were done, the car would not fire. The crew was well aware of what had happened again.

Once back to the pits, the crew decided to pull out the distributor and replace it with another one again.

In the feature there seem to be alot of 3 wides happening of the get go at about lap 10, Tom had told the spotter that the car was ill and getting worse with every lap, but Tom still drove it to the max. At lap 25, Tom was working on 4th place when coming out of turn 4, it was all over. He would come to rest on the front straight away and unable to finish a race for the first time in years. Everyone on the crew did a phenomenal job, trying remedy the problem all night but it just wasn't meant to be.

Thanks to everyone for their support and help.

Sunset Speedway, Saturday June 18, 2011

Welcome back for another week of racing. The weather was fantastic, sunny skies all the way. It was nice to see a great crowd of people on hand to watch some good, hard racing.

The first heat saw Tom starting at the back, but it wasn't long before he came through the pack to finish second.

The second heat had Tom starting outside the front row, within 1 lap he was out front and not to be denied the win.

The car seemed to be working good. In the feature once again with retaining the points lead, Tom would have to start at the rear of the field. Off the start, it would seem that the crew would encounter a new problem, the radios were not working. Everyone could hear Tom, but Tom could not hear Dan, his spotter. Tom was on his own. For the first time this year, Tom would have to come to pit road at lap 13 to replace a tire going down. With everyone fighting their way through for every position, Tom was able to finish 7th on the night.

This weekend coming up will be the first of 3 fan appreciation nights and hope the everyone can make it out for autographs and treats. Have a great week!

Sunset Speedway, MRE 75 Lap Invitational Sunday June 12th, 2011

This would be the first of the McColl 75 Lap Invitational race. It seemed quite cool on Sunday with the wind but once again the rain would stay away for some good hard racing.

The first race in the Shootout brought to Sunset a lot of top drivers including Al Inglis, Gordie Sheppard, Jason Parker, Cole Webber, Thomas Robb, Andy Kamrath as well as many Sunset drivers. The field was strong with good competition.

In the first heat Tom would start 8th and work his way to a 3rd place finish. The crew were very happy with the car and felt that they had made the right changes to give Tom a great car right from the start.

In the second heat Tom would start 2nd outside of Andy Kamrath and from the drop of the green, wasted no time putting himself out front going on to win the heat.

For the start of the feature it would be Morrow and Tom on top, at which time they decided to each roll a die. Morrow would roll a 3 and Tom would roll a 6 making an inversion of 9.

At the drop of the green there would be an early caution at lap 4 for the10 of Fumerton, then at lap 13 again for a wild wreck that would have Morrow drilling the back of the 7 of Tiemersma who came to stop on the back stretch, leaving Morrow no time or room to miss him. The race was held up to clear the two cars and then they were back to green. Tom made a quick and steady march to the front and kept moving further and further away from the 2nd place car. He would start lapping the field quickly, at this point Tom spotter was talking a lot trying to help Tom get through the traffic at lap 62 the starters were no longer waving the move over flag. Tom came to the 84 of Cronan and as he tried to get through, spun him. The turn 3 official deemed Tom an involved car and thus was moved back to 6th position. This now gave Tom 13 laps to make his way to the front. Tom was able to get by all but the 17 of Cornelius. He would finish 2nd on the night. A good finish overall. The car was incredible and the crew did an outstanding job all night.

Special thanks to McColl Racing Enterprises for great equipment each and every night. To Mike Shave of Pro Floors, Dan Robb, Mike Rusher, Paul Clinton, Drunk Jeff Thomas.

Congratulations to Drunk Jeff on acquiring the true prize of the night, compliments of Pro Floors.

Sunset Speedway, Saturday June 11th, 2011

Well it would once again be a good night for racing as the rain would hold off.

Tom managed to pull off two good heat finishes on the night with a 2nd in the first heat and a win in the second heat.

With Tom holding the current points lead it would automatically start him at the back of the field with a 18th place starting position. It just seemed that Tom was not able to capitalize in traffic throughout the feature, but was still able to finish 7th. The car ran good and in turn gave the crew time on Sunday to figure out how to make it that much better for the Sunday show.

Sunset Speedway, Saturday June 4th, 2011

Hi everyone, well the weather cooperated on the hill, considering almost every other track was rained out. It would be the first time trial night for the late models, and it sounds like it will be the last of the time trials as the fans have spoken and are not happy with cutting out heats.

The time trials went extremely well for Tom and the crew as they went out third last for qualifying and laid down the quick time and record for the night.

The feature had Tom starting on the back row. He would work his way through traffic at a steady pace managing to avoid contact in front of him a couple of times during the feature. The final caution would come with 15 laps to go and with that, Tom was able to get himself to a third place finish on the night.

Please note that this weekend is a double header with the first McColl Racing Invitational happening on Sunday. We hope everyone can come out. Have a great week to all!

Sunset Speedway, Saturday May 28th, 2011

Hello everyone, welcome back to another week of racing. With only this being the third week into the season, you would think it was the end of the season. The racing was intense, with a night packed with action and ending it off with everyone on their feet to the end.

With a busy previous week, sorting out numerous issues. It would seem that Tom and the crew were getting closer. In the first heat Tom would finish second which is where he started.

In the second heat Tom would start at the back. On the restart, the 46 of Zardo would get into Tom coming out of turn 4, sending Tom around. With only a handful of laps, Tom would get himself to a 6th place finish.

Before the feature, the crew would work feverishly getting the back end of the car straightened out. With an outstanding team of crew getting it done, Dan Robb, Jeff Thomas, Paul Clinton and Mike Rusher.

In the feature, Tom started 13th, there were a number of cautions. With the racing being so tight, it was very hard to gain any ground with everyone looking for real estate anywhere they could find it. 3 wide seemed to happen alot as everyone was getting impatient waiting for openings. With only a couple of laps left in the race, the final caution would come out and this would be the race changer. Tom would try to get inside the 41 of Holdaway and with Holdaway trying to prevent this, went up the track giving Tom the opening he would need. Holdaway would again try to come down to hold off Tom, but he was there, this then left enough room for the 17 of Cornelius to throw it in the middle, thus sending both Holdaway and Cornelius up the track. Coming out of turn 3, the 11 of Morrow would get to the bottom and the race to the checkers was on. With Tom coming out the winner by mere inches. With everyone to their feet, it was quite a finish.

Special thanks to Pro Floors of Barrie for their support as well as Mccoll Racing.

Be sure to come out this week, as it will be the first Time Trial night for the late models.

Have a great week !

Sunset Speedway, Saturday May 21st, 2011

Well with the rainout on May 14th, everyone was ready to officially start the racing season. The time trials will be in another couple of weeks for the late models.

As with every new season, there are always complications and this would be no exceptions. The new McColl car would see some bugs on this night.

In the first heat, Tom would come away with a fourth place finish, which was impressive considering he had a flat tire. Once he came in the crew went to work and quickly found the flat. They would would move even quicker to replace the tire for the second heat, where Tom would finish second. The 29 car of Sean Grosman would go on to win the heat, for his first of the year. Congratulations to Sean.

Tom and the crew had found a couple of issues with the car preparing for the feature. The guys would put their heads together and attempt to resolve them. In the feature, Tom finished fourth and felt that they still had issues afterwards. All in all, it was a decent night considering. As with every great racing team, they will get it figured out and come back even stronger.
The crew will be hard at work this week, getting ready for Saturday night.

Have a great week everyone!

Sunset Speedway, Saturday May 7th, 2011

Welcome back everyone for another season of racing.

The off season was extremely busy for Tom. In January, Tom would receive the Inside Track Award for Most Deserving of Induction into the Hall of Fame as voted by all of you.

As well on the the same weekend Tom would also earn a second place finish in Spencer Lewis's Power Rankings for 2010.

Then it was onto Car Shows, the first would be Performance World in March under the Sunset Speedway Banner and then the mall show in April at The Bayfield Mall.

On April 16th 2011 Tom and Anne would also make it official by gettting married, before racing season. Needless to say the schedule was hectic in the off season, preparing 2 cars as, Sean Grosman would also come back on board for another season of racing at Sunset Speedway.

Well it seemed like the 2011 race season would never get here, but here we are and it would arrive in fine style. With a beautiful night of racing to start things off.

Saturday was a non points night which allowed everyone to see what they had and shakedown their cars. and really see what the competition was bringing to the table.

By the looks of it, everyone seems to be on their A game looking for all the real estate they can get. It looks to be an incredible year of racing and a very tough one at that.

Tom and the crew looked fast and consistent with a brand new McColl car. With two second place finishes in the heats, this would set him up for pole for the feature, but with the roll of the dice, he would roll 8 and thus have an interesting start to the night.

Late in the feature, things would go wrong with guys fighting to hang onto real estate, causing some serious wrecks. Tom was able to keep out of trouble and come home with a hard earned third place finish.

Be sure to come out on the 14th of May as this will be the first night of time trials for the Late Models, and something different for everyone.

Have a great week everyone!
